It'd seen steep increase since its beginning in 1977 and had an appetite for more. Ten years back, its first Canadian store was opened in Toronto, followed by three more stores in Ontario and four in British Columbia. Was it time to enlarge into, deeper and, if yes which states? It will be interesting to expand into Quebec with a shop located in Montreal, but that state had a strong union presence, which was not consistent with the culture of the firm.
Also uncertain was which an extensive Canadian operation should be running. Should the present U.S. team facilitate the expansion, or should a Canadian management team be developed? A methodical way of assessing the alternatives was needed.
