A situational theory of leadership tries to fit an unique direction style or kind to specific external circumstances. The general thought is that one kind of direction will be successful in one situation, but a different type of direction will be successful in another scenario. Situational theories of leadership have been too abstract to affect to specific scenarios. Nevertheless, considerable intuitive appeal is retained by the concept of situational leadership. In this article we draw on our previous research about situational leadership during resuscitation in a trauma center, in order to derive an overall strategy of how a leader can best develop her or his own personal theory of direction which best works for their unique circumstances.
The center of the tactical strategy involves: (1) defining goals for a specific situation, (2) explaining potential direction types, (3) identifying situational states, (4) matching a leadership style to the special scenario, and (5) discovering how the match between leadership style and scenario will be made. The medical trauma center we profile provided an intriguing example of how leaders considered components of the scenario to direct their own leadership.
