Water Funds: Financing Natures Ability to Protect Water Supplies Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Nature plays an important role in maintaining the flow and water quality. Human activities often reduce the quality and / or quantity of water flowing in the downstream users, but also the conservation of natural ecosystems and the sustainable conservation of those who live upstream in the catchment areas can help provide clean, reliable water supplies for downstream users of water. Water funds are a way for downstream users to keep their water supply and pay for the restoration and conservation of natural ecosystems. They also allow up and down the communities to work together for mutual benefit, maintain or restore the ability of nature to improve the water quality and reliable flow, while providing economic opportunities for upstream communities. This case introduces the concept of ecosystem services (the role that natural ecosystems play in supporting and implementing human life) and payments for ecosystem services (PES), in which members pay to preserve or restore the ability of nature to provide these services. He describes a water funds and other PES mechanisms as well as some of the problems faced by the water fund. Some examples are water funds and other programs PES. "Hide
