This instance is part of the entourage of teaching materials which uses China as an example of the managerial implications resulted from the so called War for Talent; and is intended to create insights into “how to best play with the talent game” in China; or elsewhere. We aim to create an interactive and rich class discussion of the problems raised among seasoned company practitioners; by embracing a variety of fascinating teaching formats: an opening note; four instances; an “appraisal activity” and a video. In particular; this instance features a private enterprise that is a start-up in a niche company that is still in its infancy in China – architectural lighting design services. In 2005; Dr Lei Fu returned to China to set this design house up of becoming an international leader with the dream. Nevertheless; with an almost entire absence of veteran talent in this business throughout China; Dr Fu had to source an experienced project manager from Europe. Within two years; LEOX Design has gained a worldwide reputation. By riding on the business, initial success is used; Dr Fu has to hire more direction talent; with foreign experience and strategic thinking; to turn his dream into reality.

Dr Fu knows that while locating individuals with the characters his wants are not easy enough; locating folks who understand both the company and architectural lighting design is going to prove even more challenging.
