CFLs were a touch bit in Walmart's sustainability work, and although by October 2007, Walmart's target of promoting 100 million solid fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) had been achieved, the accomplishment really highlighted how little CFLs had penetrated.

With over 100 million families in the U.S., this impressive-sounding effect really meant less than one CFL per dwelling on average. Walmart had much more work ahead in pricing and positioning CFLs to make them a viable presence in the lighting class. A community collapse here could lead Walmart to lose impetus in the greening of its brand. Was the problem a matter of merchandise, price, promotion or placing?
