In 2006, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Maharashtra have begun to implement a plan to improve the economic condition of the city. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, was the richest city in India, with a wealth through trade, finance and film. But the city was also known for its vast slums, terrible traffic jams and poor infrastructure. And while the Indian economy has been growing rapidly since the late 1980s, Mumbai seems to lose its position in other Indian cities such as Bangalore, as well as other regional financial centers such as Shanghai and Dubai. Plan of the city is considering to relax land use and rent control regulations and the creation of new infrastructure in an effort to make Mumbai a more affordable and accessible.
