In this note, we examine the extent to which venture capital is sufficiently placed in America for the rapid commercialization of clean energy technologies. The need for a revolution in clean energy is driven not only by environmental impacts of energy use, but additionally by the need for energy security, to address growing concerns about a catastrophe in the balance of payments, and as a possibly significant source of national occupations.
Our premise in this note is the fact that a key facet of such widespread change is these problems cannot be "solved" by one technology. Rather, technological changes certainly will take a wide array of processes and different merchandise to come to market and will have to be pervasive. A number of the technological progress will come from incremental innovations that don't depend on venture capital.
