The Patient Escort Services head for Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) must evaluate the best technique to increase efficiency of hospital's porter system. Porters represented an essential part of various hospital procedures, easing timely flow of materials, equipment and patients through the hospital. Recently, VGH had experienced episodes where the capacity of the porters was insufficient to fulfill the demands of the hospital and, despite best-efforts at scheduling, these problems remained.
The head of Patient Escort Services spent collecting data to discover where the problems existed, and wondered if his data could supply answers to some crucial questions: How well did the present porter schedule meet daily need? What is the optimal number of porters? The head of the Patient Escort Services had one week to put forward his report to the board of directors of VGH.
