United Way: Taking a Public Stance on a Controversial Issue Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In June 2012, the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington chapter of the United Way had the chance to present its views at an upcoming public forum on a proposition to construct a casino in Kingston, Ontario. The opportunity of establishing a casino in Kingston was an issue, in that it is contentious and emotional; influential business and government leaders supported it, but it also had many detractors. Pro-casino supporters said a casino would create jobs, spur local company, and contribute millions of tax dollars to municipal coffers. Opponents contended that a casino would cause an increase in the problem of gambling and the social costs of a casino would outweigh the economic benefits that were touted.

City councilors were evenly divided on the problem. For United Way, many of the proponents and adversaries alike were supportive and active of the organization. The United Way was requested to take a stand, and yet, it was reluctant to enter into a political discourse. Was it possible for the United Way to maintain its worth without alienating pro business donors and local government officials? (Luke Fiske is affiliated with Smith School of Business.)
