Union Carbide's Bhopal Plant (A) Case Solution
In December 1984, an Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, sprung a leak, releasing thousands of gallons of highly toxic gas into the air. During the time, the leak of the gas was covered, around 2,000 people had expired. In a series of three excerpts from published reports, the case covers the events that led up to the catastrophe and the consequence--financial, legal, and psychological--for Union Carbide's direction.
The case was created to enable pupils to investigate the complex set of duties that surround foreign direct investment. It empowers them to discuss the extent to which Union Carbide's U.S.-based direction was responsible for actions undertaken by Indians in India, and then to think of this obligation in terms of its various parts--financial, commercial, and moral.
