Backsourcing, defined usually as bringing services outsourced to a third party back in-house, is a growing phenomenon. The decision to backsource has several significant implications for an organization, as it demands the organization reintegrate knowledge to handle organizational change, and develop new abilities and competences. Also considering that there is very restricted empirical proof of how to productively execute the backsourcing process, two case studies contained in this teaching instance offer additional insight into the procedure of backsourcing.
To prepare students for case analysis, this teaching instance starts by describing the backsourcing occurrence, followed by a summary of the backsourcing trend, and contains a simple review of the applicable literature that largely focuses on backsourcing choices and touch on serious success factors for applying a backsourcing proposal. This is ensued by two case studies that depict two basically distinct examples of backsourcing. However, whatever the character of the backsourced task, evaluation of both of these cases allows deeper comprehension of the procedure by which the backsourcing initiative has been executed. Thus, while each case may be used separately to examine different aspects of backsourcing, they also can be assessed in a comparative manner to better understand the method of backsourcing.
