2 INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this case study is to analyze and study the business structure, policies and the strategies of the management of the UCB organization. The purpose of this analysis is to realize the strengths and benefits of the current system of the company and highlight the limitations of it. The main idea of this is to bring these issues in the budgetary discussion of the management of the company with the shareholders and chief executives of the organization.
3 CURRENT STATE AND STRUCTURE OF THE UCB:
3.1 UCB ORGANIZATION:
UCB is a multi-dimensional and well expanded organization that serves its customers all over the world in three segments of the business, which are film, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. However, the major driving force for the revenues and the financial performance of the company is due to the pharmaceuticals or to be more specific the drugs that it manufactures and sells in the markets all over the world. The organization is based and headquartered in Belgium and it was established there in the early 1920s and later expanded in to the United States in the early in 1930s. The sales and revenues of the organization are evenly distributed in the major markets of the world including the Europe, America and the Asian-Pacific regions.
3.2 BUSINESS SEGMENTS OFF THE ORGANIZATION:
The organization basically started operating in the Filming industry, however over the period of time due to the wise strategies and policies of the management of the organization the business has well expanded itself in terms of both the product diversification and the expansion of the organization as a whole as illustrated above. The management of the company operates the business in three different segments of the market and they are the pharmaceuticals, chemicals and filming and all these activities of the business are segregated among roughly the 130 subsidiaries of the business that it maintains in the markets all over the world.
3.3 FILMS:
The Film segment of the business manufactures and produces BOPP (biaxially-oriented polypropylene) and cellulose films for packaging, labelling, graphics arts and designs or various diverse clients that include food and beverages, labels, security products, industrial membranes and various health and pharmaceutical organizations that operate in the market. The sales of the organization over the past year generated above 396 million euros and were fractionally greater than the previous year.
3.4 CHEMICALS:
The chemicals segment of the organization manufactures and produces Polyester resins (molding and toner) and Acrylic resins that are hard plastics for various customers of the organization. The sales revenue of the organization illustrated earnings of 677 million euros in the last year.
3.5 PHARMACEUTICAL:
The pharmaceutical segment of the organization manufactures and produces drugs for various diseases like allergies and asthma. This segment represent the most significant revenues and profits of the company overall. This segment of the business is well established and expanded all over the world and the most profitable and in demand product of the company is the Zyrtec drug.
4 CURRENT STATE AT THE UCB:
The present state and structure of the Information Technology of the organization are divided among two divisions of the company. These two are classified as the regional operations and the global operations of the company.These. divisions of the organization assist the management and the company in conducting and implementing business functions and operations. The information technology and the information systems of the organization were independently and separately initiated within different sectors and regions of the organization however, the management of the organization wants to establish and practice global IT and IS systems within the business functions and operations and the main reason of this is to achieve co-ordination and communication between diverse segments and markets of the country while also increasing the efficiency simultaneously.
