City, buildings, products, services, systems and strategies, all face the same need to integrate knowledge, understanding, participation, and adaptation. As a result, it is time to confront the tension design, say the authors, who then identify three approaches to design: the routine approach, the example of planned city of Brasilia, visionary approach, the example of IKEA, and evolutionary approaches such as Linux. On the way, they show that the design is not just a metaphor for control, but the essence of it.
