The field of strategic communication encompasses a booming crisis communication literature that attempts to identify effective and ineffective crisis communication efforts. This article extracts key lessons from the disaster communication research to create a set of guidelines that managers may use to inform their crisis communication efforts.
The analysis comprises an assessment of timing of crisis and answers as well as their desired consequences, the disaster response strategies, and the situational variables that have proven to change the potency of disaster response strategies. The research results supply the basis for evidence-based catastrophe communication. The guidelines help supervisors to understand their communicative choices and will affect the corporate reputation and other important crisis and consequences, and will help managers to make educated choices about crisis communication.
