Although the federal gas tax plays several roles in the financing of surface transportation infrastructure in the United States, experts do not agree on the appointment of taxes. Some argued that it was essentially a fee for road users supported federal country. Others felt that it should play a more prominent role in the environmental, energy and transport policy by correcting for driving-related externalities. However, others felt that it should be used to reduce the federal deficit. Finally, the tax itself has remained at the same level since 1993, and with the Foundation Trust highway virtually insolvent, many experts believe that it is time to increase.
