Several companies extract their competitive advantage from the utilization and protection of trade secrets. This implies that if these firms' trade secrets are misappropriated, it even endanger their survival and can be extremely expensive. In order to try and prevent workers from inappropriately divulging trade secrets, firms will often apply processes and rules such as non-disclosure agreements that restrict what employees are permitted to do with trade secrets.
We contend that a key to the effective protection of trade secrets lies in the formation of positive secrecy climates, wherein employees strongly value organizational secrets that are maintained and found as a portion of their formal job obligations. We explain how managers can develop secrecy climates that are positive in their own organizations, and summarize the dangers and potential benefits of these climates.
