In 1998, Klaus Leisinger and Karin Schmitt, the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development in Basel, Switzerland, came sociologist who wanted to help in the launch of a pilot program in Tanzania to combat the crisis HIV/AIDS- 8 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa . The proposed program was unusual in that it addressed the psychological and social trauma these children experienced. Another unusual aspect of this request was that Novartis, while the second largest pharmaceutical company in the world, did not make, sell or distribute any products related to HIV / AIDS. Novartis, and his charitable foundation, has been committed to help the needy in developing countries, however. Leisinger and Schmitt does not believe that "throwing money" at the problem as a result of decisions, but rather, they are looking for new ways to solve problems and crises. But given the unusual nature of the request, Leisinger and Schmitt was to decide whether the framework should help to run this program.
