The National Football League and Brain Injuries Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

The National Football League (NFL) was both typically the most popular spectator sport in the U.S. and a major economic entity, taking in about $10 billion a year in revenue. Yet through the early twenty-first century, a heightened knowledge of the long-term effects of head injuries on NFL players signaled a serious risk to the long term continuation of the game. Particularly concerning was the indicator that some dead professional football players had developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)-a neurodegenerative disease which had a powerful influence on an individual's mental as well as physical well-being-most likely as a result of insistent hits sustained throughout their football careers and which might have led to their deaths.

Over 4,000 retired players had jointly sued the NFL over the head injuries they had endured during their time in the NFL and the ensuing health problems they attributed to these harms. In part, the litigation alleged that the NFL had not been forthcoming with players about the health dangers of head injuries. Both sides had reached a tentative $765 million resolution in 2013, the volume of which would go to compensating retired players suffering from such ailments as Alzheimer's or dementia. This settlement wasn't applicable to current or future players, while it compensated retired players.

Could the NFL preserve the sport by making it safer through new rules or gear changes, or was football a fundamentally physical game that no amount of new rules or gear could make totally safe? Present and future players, now understanding full well the possible long term health consequences of football, tacitly accepted the risks entailed? As a team owner, is now the time to sell while franchise worth and fan support are at their peaks, or will the NFL's business be workable for many years to come?
