Structured upon public documents, the case scenario reconsiders the current history of the whole world's fourth biggest company, BP p.l.c. The events described confront students with a number of the challenging scenarios top managers face when functionality and corporate standing are at stake. Two problems in particular are addressed: first, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill caused by the Deepwater Horizon explosion in April 2010; and, second, BP's "beyond petroleum" corporate development and rebranding strategy.
These two interwoven storylines compare BP's efforts at developing a "green" standing with the inherent environmental and social hazards of the oil industry. Each storyline provides a unique perspective on the British oil major, while focusing on the fundamental topics of corporate responsibility and decision making in complicated scenarios, whether short term (oil spill) or long term ("beyond petroleum"). The case is presented from the perspective of Steve, a fictional executive assistant of former BP CEO Tony Hayward.
