In this chapter ‘the land of opportunities’ the writer discusses how the Americans do not know about the social classes and the effects that they have on our society. It is argued that the common Americans are not given equal opportunity. It is said that American history books have been a great influence on what we see about the division of classes because a great deal of history is often left behind.
The writer says that the teenagers have compared the life of different classes of children and their thinking as the writer asked the college freshmen why people are poor and why their families are well off and the answer of this question according to them was that the fault as of the people who are poor and unsuccessful and the children were unaware of the fact that these people also do not have that much of opportunity and if there is an opportunity it is less and difficult to attain.
In the history textbooks, the books leave out many important parts of history, if this would have been added to their course then there would be a different perspective of looking at things in the manner they should see. In many of the history books the author looked into 12 books out of which 6 books had no trace of social class or structure mentioned anywhere. This is one of the reasons I consider for the ignorance of the children of high school.
Most of the books have discussed the middle class people in the history books, which is the reason that the people do not have the knowledge of being in any other class in the country.There is a lower class that exists in America, which is being ignored by the writers and the people of America.
I can say that no one wants to talk about the lower class people and their problems as there is no charm in talking about the lower class people. There is no style, no class and no money in this class and it is considered to be the most unwanted class in the country. Moreover, the people consider that the lower class people have the same values as of the middle class to which I disagree.....................
