Perched on a cliff, the ninth-century Tatev Monastery is one of the main monasteries in Armenia. A prominent Moscow-based businessman has made a decision to make it into an appealing and accessible tourist destination. Complicating matters is inaccessibility due to harsh weather conditions and the area's major poverty as well as a deficiency of suitable infrastructure. Additionally, shortcomings in hospitality management and training mean that tourist numbers stay low.
One of the greatest challenges of the job is the management of eight stakeholders, including the local community, the Armenian Church, investors and UNESCO. How can the founder of the revival job formulate a successful strategy that will address all stakeholders' interests without endangering ethical values and his own principles? Rashid El Ayoubi De La Fuente is affiliated with American University of Beirut.
