TAPF, a Bangalore based NGO, has been hailed internationally for running the world's biggest school meal plan. It ran through 3 decentralized kitchens and 16 centralized across 9 states of India; it says it’s Mission 2020 as being able to reach out to 500,000,0 children by 2020.
The competition the foundation faces in achieving its stated mission is not only of scaling up by 2020, but also of preserving the financial sustainability of its functions in view of increased government spending on alternative social department schemes such as Right to Food, which might reduce or restrict allocations to the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme.
The case intends to look at the essential challenges that Akshaya Patra confronts in keeping up its operations and the several sustainability objectives undertaken by the NGO to fulfill the various challenges along with the chances that it may further require to innovatively fulfill its mission of feeding 5 million kids daily by 2020. It looks at the link between the different dimensions of sustainability and uses frameworks to evaluate these sustainability initiatives at Akshaya Patra. The (B) case supplements the (A) case.
