Sulla Vineyards Case Solution
Adaptations to allow grapes growth in India:
The source for all the wines is the grape vine and reaching the highest level of quality in wine is only possible with fruit of highest quality. Maximizing the quality of fruit from any vineyard site is a lengthy process, as the results are revealed after several seasons of comparison.
The grapevine prefers the temperature climate in which it is involved with warm, dry summers and mild winters. According to the scientific analysis of extensive soil and climate date the hot, dry days and cold nights of Dashiki in the fall and winter months were similar to the summer growing environment of California’s Sonora Valley.
However, in order to grow the wines grape some adaptations are needed which will then allow the growth of grapes for fine wine in India. The peculiarities of the climate are provided with the major challenges. The dusty heat and dryness year round followed by the monsoon from June to September prevents the grape vines from undergoing the usual winter break. Moreover, Sulla will need to prune the vines after the harvest and save new shoots, which will become the fruiting canes for the following year’s crop.
The latitude to grow the grapes to produce the best vines is around 35 degree to equator. However, the Dashiki region is just 20 degrees north. Sulla would need to grow the grapes in the winter months as the climate in these months is almost same as in California’s summer climate. Vines will need to be grown high and spread out to help dissipate heat and foster a leafier canopy.
More adaptations are required to make such as soil is needed to be graded into slopes so that the drainage is adequate during the monsoon season otherwise the roots of the vines will become water logged and damaged, which will reduce the production during the next season.
Varieties of Grapes Selected:

Growth in Imported Wines:
Due to the lack of availability of good quality wines made of international standards, the growth of the imported wines has increased in India. There has been minimal research in the wine making industry and the grape growing activities also increased the growth for the imported wines. The infrastructure investment by the Government is not enough in the regions where the grapes are cultivated like Mumbai-Rune-Dashiki and the cost of producing wine increases due to that. Producers do not have the proper roads and reliable sources of power and diesel generators are used for irrigation and other needs, which increase the expenses for producing the vine..............
