What role should the academic anchor to the development of high-tech region? Based on an analysis of historical data and archival documents, this article examines the question, looking at the relationship between Stanford University and Silicon Valley, the quintessence of high-tech business in the region. During an important formative years of the valley (1945-1965), Stanford had four major local business community outreach programs.
