In the November 2011, Jacko Maree, CEO of Standard Bank Group, was reconsidering the Group's important conclusions in recent years, thinking about the future, and looking for chances as South Africa emerged from the global monetary catastrophe of 2008-2010. The Group had fared comparatively well during the fiscal crisis, in the sense that no major losses had occurred, and there was almost no exposure at all to the U.S. real estate marketplace or to derivatives based on mortgages there. Nevertheless, South Africa had been damage by the global slowdown, and Standard Bank's core businesses there had endured as well. To keep shareholders happy, the Group needed to illustrate a clear strategic path and to demonstrate commitment to that strategy, perhaps by pursuing acquisition(s) or other types of growth.
