St. John the Compassionate Mission: Organizational Culture and Leadership Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

In May 2013, the founder and executive director of the St. John the Compassionate Mission, a faith-based, nonprofit social service organization located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, needs to plan for his retirement. He's become the driving force behind the organization for the past 27 years; also it represents his vision that significant work helps people get off welfare, achieving dignity as well as a sense of personal worth in the method. To that end, the Mission provides opportunities for everybody in the community to work through employment in one of its two social businesses - a bakery as well as a thrift store - or through volunteer opportunities.

Because its organizational culture emphasizes collaboration and consultation with its staff leadership council and board of directors but also with all members of the community, its decision making has been unstable and in response to perceived needs rather than forward planning. He needs to ensure an effective series that ensures the safety of a vulnerable citizenry and shields the culture, values and beliefs of the organization. Writer Colleen Sharen is affiliated with the University of Western Ontario.
