We have selected the dataset of accidents for this SPSS assignment on data mining and business intelligence.

The dataset of traffic accidents is authentic as it is obtained from NIS, i.e. National Institute of Statistics for the time period of the year 1991 to the year 2000. Secondly, the data is collected from the area Flanders in Belgium. Specifically, the data is taken from “Analysis Form for Traffic Accidents”, which, in Belgium, is filled out by the police officers when an accident occurs and some sort of injury is caused or when death occurs due to accidents on the roads of Belgium.

The dataset contains a total of 3 lac, 40 thousand and a hundred and eighty four traffic incidents. In addition to this, there are almost 50 variables in our dataset, all of these variables show different circumstances in which the accident may have occurred. For example, we have data for the course of accidents which includes the type of collision that occurred, the traffic condition which shows whether the traffic was high, medium, or low, when the accident occurred, the environmental condition, which includes the weather conditions at the time of accident, condition of road, which includes if there were any obstacles present on the road that caused the accident or in general, the condition of the surface of the road and the geographical conditions. Other attributes are direction, time of the day and day of the week, light conditions, movement, dynamics, sex of the driver, age of the driver, number of victims in the accident, number of deaths in accidents, number of victims who got injured in the accident and visibility of pedestrian bridges.

Approach Used

The main objective of this dataset is to find out the relationship between the causalities and death and injuries that occur in these accidents. In specific, the main goal of this study is to use different data mining techniques and tools to find out the underlying association between the conditions that caused the accident to happen and its aftermath consequences.

For this purpose, the approach used in this study is that we have based our analysis on regression. As regression is one of the important tools that is used in data mining.

Regression analysis is performed in order to find out the relationship among different variables and this is what our main objective of the study is. It is performed with a dependent variable and one or more independent variable. It shows us that how much of the variability is explained in dependent variables by variability in the independent variables. In simple words, regression analysis shows us that if we change the value of the independent variable then how much change is realized in the dependent variable.

Significance of the Approach Used

As mentioned earlier, regression is one of the techniques of data mining that is used for finding the relationship among different variablesin dataset, this is the reason we have used regression in our analysis as well.....................
