In the year 2005, the regime of India enacted the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Act in order to bring investment, generate export earnings, and create manufacturing jobs. However, several planned projects faced problems in obtaining land for setting up the SEZ.
In December 2007, the government introduced a fresh bit of legislation, which proposed to extend the power of eminent domain to enable the authorities to obtain land for SEZs.
