In the 1980s, the true impact of 100 years of asbestos mining in South Africa, it became clear as thousands of former miners and those who lived in the mountain communities have developed asbestos-related disease (ARD), all fatal. This case, the first four (denoted by D, UV-1350 through UV1353), explains the history of asbestos mining in South Africa, the complex relationship between multinational companies and the apartheid and post-apartheid South African regime, as well as details of the fight and the issues that many of ARD -suffering South Africa face in attracting multinational corporations to liability and redress.
