A charitable entity, The Shorefast Foundation, aims to ignite a renaissance that is rural and encourage cultural and economical resilience in the isolated communities of Fogo Island and Change Islands, Newfoundland, Canada. The cases also emphasize the value of rural areas as repositories of culture, local knowledge and traditions. The two Shorefast cases illustrate the implementation issues enclosing the building of a multimillion dollar five star Inn and the initial creation of the Foundation. They are best used together as a string, but can be utilized independently as well.
Case A substantiates the information related to the socioeconomic history of Fogo Island along with an in depth profile of the establisher of the Shorefast Foundation, Zita Cobb. The case exemplifies how the founder of an organization can shape an organization's goals, vision, and beliefs.
In addition, it describes the model of social entrepreneurship that was being proposed and the organizational structure of the Shorefast Foundation and its affiliates as it stood before the building of the revenue-generating Inn.
Learning objectives: The case substantiates 1) introduction of the concept of business models in general and explore the disparity between 'traditional' and 'social entrepreneurship' business models; 2) aid students appreciate the link amid a founder's values, beliefs and objectives (managerial preferences) and strategy formulation and realization; 3) initiate students to the organizational confrontation implicated in the social entrepreneurship and the nervousness to be conferred amongst environmental, economic and social goals.
