By 2007, Gretchen Morgenson, columnist and assistant editor at The New York Times, had got major notice from business influentials, regulators, and academics for her coverage of a broad range of financial and government issues. Morgenson composed the bulk of her posts at the executive and board level about corporate malfeasance, bringing focus to both prominent and lesser-known cases of misbehavior in corporate America. Not everyone, however, agreed with her characterization of and analytic way of covering government dilemmas. Critics charged that, although many of the trends she pointed to were not unworthy of discourse, her articles did not suitably take a comprehensive perspective or recognize the extensive implications of her positions. As she was in her assertions to some degree, the critics of Morgenson were aggressive in their rebuttal.
