Dr. Michael Lehman was the newly assigned outside chairman of Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology (the department) at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He had been carried in specifically to deal with the consistent functionality of the department. Section members had split into two camps - research and clinical teaching - and open struggle existed between members with the result that the clinical anatomy division was contemplating leaving the faculty.
Another area of anxiety involved the decreasing research result by the cell biology division; many research programs had postponed, resulting in the loss of outside finance. His overall policy was three fold: keep the section jointly; enable faculty to create scholarly research; and rejuvenate research activities. From a change management perspective, develop a plan of action for each issue and Lehman desired to identify his key challenges. He thought about the way to implement change in his new department.
