The newly appointed chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (department) at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry was thinking about how she would approach the next five year in her new role. The chair thought about two of the important problems she had confront: building a cohesive department and nurturing a high performance culture. She became chair at a time when direction was needed.
The section had formed in June 2002 as an effect of the merger between the modest Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and the Department of Physiology. The seat still sensed that some faculty members in Pharmacology felt as if their section had been taken over by Physiology, while the amalgamation had gone well. At present, it was occasionally challenging to evaluate functionality between faculty members due to differences in workload composition and a lack of documentation. The present thinking was that the department had to go towards adopting best practices in their processes. The chair needed to look at the issue from a broader outlook. She wondered how the issue could be framed and what a possible option might look like.
