Sam Silver, a second-year law student at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, was near the end of another visit to Klump & Mason LLP, a Bay Street law firm. He was meeting Chuck Clayton, director of professional development at the company. Silver was emotionally exhausted from the interview procedure that had used up much of his life for the last three months, during which he had been seeking a place as a summer student at Bay Street companies. He had narrowed his collection to two leading national companies, Andrews, Mantle & Smithers LLP and Mason & Klump. On November 1 and 2, Silver had interviews at six Bay Street businesses, including his top two picks. Although he alleged his first alternative, Mantle, Andrews & Smithers, would offer him a place on November 3, when proper offers would be made, he was not assured the company would certainly do so.
