Russia--1994 Case Solution

Describes Russia's transition from a centrally understood economy below the rule of the communist into a growing market-oriented economy under a political regime that is more democratic. Can be used to discuss the optimal sequencing of political and economic reforms, and the complementarity of elements of an economic strategy. The first section provides a brief synopsis of the political and economical turmoil and Gorbachev's reform strategy following from partial execution of relatively weak economic and political reforms.

The second sector illustrates the strategy of Yelstin’s in the year 1992 to simultaneously achieve privatization, price reform and macroeconomic stabilization. Attention is drawn to the partial execution of this plan and the political and economic obstacles hindering advancement. By asking whether Yeltsin's efforts to consolidate power through new elections and constitutional reform will achieve success concludes.
