Rudy Crew, former chancellor of New York City public schools and the current Miami-Dade County school superintendent, talks about his path to power, what motivates him, and his views of leadership. He discusses his choice to be the voice for the urban school and his belief that the leader is guided by his own inner compass. A person must be in the decision-making, or very close to it to have an effect, expressing the view from the side, just not effective. The crew held a powerful position to be widely welcomed in both New York and Miami. Transparency in their actions and responsibilities is vital for him to clarify the issues and the formation of strategic alliances, the need for change. Crew describes the challenges and uncertainties he faced when running programs to improve urban school in New York, and the importance of being a leader who believed that change was possible. He indicates that he has set ambitious goals for themselves and their followers, despite the uncertainty, and was willing to learn and adjust their plans as the situation evolved.
