Rick Drumm (his actual name), once a teenage drumming competition winner, is confronting the most promising, but also the most ambitious, career transition in his profession as a supervisor and a leader. Having survived a string of interviews - by various Board members, the headhunter, and the Chairman of D'Addario - he's told that he must be interviewed by Jack Welch, the legendary CEO of General Electric, as the ultimate measure in his choice procedure. Rick has to determine the best way to prepare for this interview, the best way to approach this final evaluation of his qualifications to assume the direction of a more elaborate and considerably bigger association.
The (C) case focus on Jim D'Addario (the scion of the D'Addario family, and Chairman and CEO of the firm), and his perspectives about the growing demands for executive direction at this historically venerable musical accessories business. The case also describes Jim's perspectives on what the business wanted at this point in time, and his view on the key characteristics of Rick Drumm. The case closes with Rick describing his first measures to diagnose the activities he took to take charge of the scenario, and the most pressing issues at D'Addario.
