What comes to mind when you hear the term part-time employment? Is there a small, disapproving frown purse lips? Sorry, you will flood your heart? Have you forgotten the mental notation to study themes permeate your brain? While we are familiar with unemployment and its consequences, we are much less aware of underemployment and its effects on people and organizations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in January 2012, part-time employment, is estimated to affect more than 10 million people in the U.S. civilian labor force. Its value shows that part-time employment is an important issue for all participants. Combining practical experience of outplacement firm (Right Management, headed by our second author) and what we have learned from the research we describe here are five types of part-time, to discuss the widespread assumptions about the problem, and propose ways in which the organization can use the power of the economy as a whole phenomenon.
