Overview- USPHS Study on Untreated Syphilis

The Tuskegee study of the untreated syphilis also referred to as Tuskegee syphilis experiment was supposed to be the unethical, infamous and maliciousclinical study which has been conducted by theUnited States Public Health Service during1932-1972. The ultimate purpose ofthisclinical study is to criticallyobserve the natural progression of all the syphilis that have been untreated under the guise of taking health oriented benefits for free from the government of the United States.

The reason behind this clinical study was to determine or understand the natural history of the disease throughout the time as well as ascertain complete dosage treatment for specific people and determine the best time which can be pondered to receive injections.

The number of people involved in the study were almost 600 men, out of them 399 were found with syphilis.They had been included in the experimented group; the control subjects were 201. Most of them were sharecroppers who were illiterate and poor as well.

They were enticed and enrolled in this clinical study with a number of incentives such as rides to and from clinic, medical exams, meals, guarantee and free treatmentfor minor ailments.They had been also ensured to beprovided burial stipends after their death to their families.

When the clinical study had begun, there was no proven treatment for syphilis. The standard treatment was penicillin in 1947 for the disease.The medicine tended to be withheld for both control and experimental group as a part of the treatment.

In July 1972, an Ad Hoc Advisory Panel was appointed in order to review the clinical study.Nine members wereincluded in the panel from the field of religion, law, labor, medicine, health administration, education and public affairs.

It was found that men freely agreed to be treated and examined for the cure of the disease;however, no evidence was provided to them regarding the purpose of the study. In fact, all of the under examined men were not provided with enough facts and information and they were also misled in the wrongdirection.

No adequate treatment was given to men. The only drug of choice was penicillin in 1947 for syphilis, which was also not offered to them as a subject. It was concluded by the advisory panel that the Tuskegee study was ethically unjustified and the sparse knowledge was gained when compared with the study risk posted for the specific subject. The study was once stopped in October 1972 as advised by the panel. After one month, Tuskegee study was announced to be endedby Assistant Secretary for Health and Scientific Affairs (The Tuskegee Study, 2015).
