In October 2001, Bethlehem Steel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Curtis "Hank" Barnette had served as chairman and CEO from 1992 to 2000 and was no longer at the helm of the second-biggest steel manufacturer in America. Before stepping down, Barnette had taken many important steps toward leaving a heritage of historic preservation and community revitalization for the property of Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Other and Barnette business leadership, including Vice President of Public Affairs Steve Donches, had put into relationships and place legal mechanisms that would continue to direct the redevelopment acre - of the almost 1,800 brownfield site throughout the next decade. However they would have the same direct impact on the redevelopment.
