Curtis "Hank" Barnette departed Bethlehem Steel's boardroom with a good sense of calm and function. He loved Bethlehem Steel. He had seen it prosper and decline over the previous 30 years, and he had given most of his life. Barnette was a soft spoken man with a calm countenance along with graying hair. He paused at the plate glass window and looked toward the huge blast furnaces and also the miles of steelwork structures on the south side of town.
This was American history. So much had occurred many lives, families, initiations, and purposeful interactions. And a unique division of the corporation would come to a finish on his watch as chairman and CEO: The doors were closing on Bethlehem Steel's Structural Products Division found in the center of the city of Bethlehem. Someplace elsewhere a window opened when one door closed -did it? The incumbent business construction would end, but he had strengths to work with: the property, historical artifacts, town, buildings, goodwill he had spent a good part of his life along with the folks.
