Renault-Nissan Alliance (RNA) launched four overlap projects in four vital functions (human resources, manufacturing and logistics, purchasing, and research and development). The projects demanded Nissan, Renault and the two independent entities, to increase cooperation and integration thus reduce prices to be able to better compete globally in both developed and emerging markets, and to strengthen economies of scale.
However, because the alliance opened possibilities for inviting new partners and raised the level, it also increased the time and resources needed to reach joint tactical decisions between the two companies. RNA had many hard choices to make with respect to moving forward - not least of which included finding an ultimate replacement for the alliance's 61-year old chief executive officer.
