In 1986 Red Star had become the leading department store in China for furniture as well as home gear products (toilet, lamps and the textile complements, etc). The business structure of Red Star was to supply adequate space for vendors (that leased the space) in great shopping mall facilities, nicely designed and equipped (parking, transport, services) located in key developing zones of Chinese growing cities.
In 85 different cities, 115 shopping malls had opened in the first 27 years. With capability to launch up to 10 new malls each year, Red Star anticipated to reach 200 malls by 2020. By the year 2012, the firm employed over 15,000 people. With increased competition, and also the growing sophistication of its own operations should the firm handle its ambitious growth strategy?
