In 20th century, airlines and automobiles shoved railway into the background as an often-troubled and scarcely opted option. Subsequent to review of the long history of rail in the U.S., this paper examines the situation in the 21st century, comprising the rail market structure, and details key players such as BNSF, CSX and the Norfolk Southern.
Currently, by most measures, cargo train is doing better than ever, while passenger rail faces considerable challenges - though it is elucidated that bottlenecks and numerous pain points interfere with optimal use of rail to move both goods and people. This note provides a mature way of thinking through the dilemmas confronted by the rail transportation and debates three recent cargo railway infrastructure projects that hold prospective promise for the future: the National Gateway, the Keystone Corridor, and the CREATE decongestion project in Chicago.
