The case is about machine shop of Baker Hughes where departmental organization hasbeen changed from traditional hierarchy to a “team based environment”. The Radical Bearing Team hasimplemented Self Direct Work Team (SDWT)Structure to its team.The individual behaviors and characteristic of change affected the team to cope up with responsibilities, authorities and problems of the company. The team managed utilization of equipment and daily activities as well as quality control of manufactured item. There were some conflicts faced by the team and its leadership but they were solved by supporting new roles and ideas of team members.
The team and its operations were successful, but innovation has to be encouraged by adapting the changing environment. Specific techniques needto be adopted by the team in order to measure itsperformances. In addition, the management of the manufacturing shop also challenged the team leadership that would produce justified implementation of SDWRTs.
After analyzing team and its efficiency for three months, management has decided to expand SDWT on macro level as the company has learnt best practices from RBT experiences in order to contribute for company’s future success.
