Uralkali, the giant Russian potash company, determined to stop export sales during the Belarusian Potash Company - an export cartel it had formed with Belaruskali. Export it independently through its own trading company and Uralkali planned to improve potash production.
This move threatened to reduce global potash prices by up to 25 per cent. Immediately, the stock prices of important potash companies around the world plummeted. This set of three instances looks in the possible competitive strategies of three key players in the sector: PotashCorp, the firm together with the world's biggest potash reservations; Agrium, a business in the middle of a sizable potash mine growth; and BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company planning huge potash mine development.
