Taiwan-based memory maker Power Quotient International Co. Ltd. (PQI) had an established system for selecting, evaluating, and managing suppliers. A scoring system that assessed suppliers in areas ranging from technical expertise to service quality and responsiveness made it simple for management to see providers' strengths and weaknesses and to determine whether to keep a provider at arm's length or to cultivate a strong relationship together with the supplier. PQI had completed its biannual assessment of suppliers, of which several demanded additional investigation. These providers had received only average scores despite strong performance both technically and commercially.
