In the A case set in 2004, president of consumer electronics company, Kaneo Itoh, Pioneer Corporation, was considering getting the plasma display operations of a different Japanese firm, NEC. Pioneer had decided some years past that plasma display panel (PDP) technology was a strategic area in order for it to invest in. Recently, Pioneer was selling increasing numbers of plasma screen TV sets using PDPs.
Additional capability would become mandatory while the company was assembling a new PDP generation facility that will soon become operational if demand continued to rise. Purchasing NEC's plasma operations would give Pioneer this capability, the potential for realizing scale economies and some valuable intellectual property NEC had developed.
