Pepsi-BASIX Partnership Harvard Case Solution & Analysis

Awards CASE: gets best at ISB Case Competition 2010 held in partnership with the Richard Ivey School of Business and the Association of Indian Management Schools and sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. BASIX was a microfinance company livelihood promotion as a key agenda. It was a strong presence in the impoverished state of Jharkhand, India where marginal farmers struggling to make ends meet. In 2005, PepsiCo India Holdings Pvt. Ltd (Pepsi) has entered into an agreement with the BASIX for promoting contract farming of potatoes in Jharkhand. According to the agreement, Pepsi was to supply seeds and get assured supply of potato chips-class quality. BASIX was to provide micro-finance for farmers and do training and consulting practice for the package (POP). Farmers should have received a ransom assured of the product and the opportunity to learn modern farming techniques. The collaboration was a success in the first year and the project has seen very strong growth in the second year. Results of the second year, however, were not as encouraging as in the first year.
