This case provides a summary of the nonprofit organization PATH and its Safe Water Project-a five-year effort started in 2006 with $17 million in capital from the global development unit of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The aim of the grant was to assess to what extent market-based strategies might help hasten the widespread adoption and sustained usage of household water treatment and safe storage products by low-income inhabitants. In four states, about 10 pilots were conducted by ROUTE over the course of the grant. In the process, the Safe Water Project team amassed substantial insights associated with user-centered design, accessibility, and affordability (see OIT-107, OIT 108, and OIT-109 for particular lessons in each of these three regions). TRAIL also combined a number of essential general lessons about planning and carrying out pilot projects, which are enlarged upon in the case.
